How do you take a audio output signal and drop it down to preamp level??
Your question does not have enough information to answer precisely, because you simply said “audio output signal” and “preamp level.”
Do you mean audio output signal to drive a speaker, or do you mean an audio output signal such as a line level output?
When you say drop it down to preamp level, do you mean the input level for a microphone type input, or some other?
I will just take a guess that what you want to do is take an output from a device that is to drive a speaker, and connect it to a preamplifier of some sort. If that is the case, then you may be able to use a simple resistive voltage divider. But some audio outputs are not referenced to ground, and if this is the case, you will also need an isolation transformer.
